Cylindrical VS Prismatic LiFePO4 Cells

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) is an inorganic compound with the formula FeLiO₄P. It has an orthorhombic crystal structure (space group P n m a) with unit cell lattice parameters a = 10.333, b = 6.009, c = 4.695 Å, and α = β = γ = 90°.

The structure of LiFePO4 consists of FeO6 octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra. The FeO6 octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra contact each other by sharing oxygen vertices in the b-c plane. The FeO6 octahedra then link another PO4 tetrahedra by sharing an edge.

In this structure, the iron atom and 6 oxygen atoms form an octahedral coordination sphere, described as FeO6, with the Fe ion at the center. The phosphate groups, PO4, are tetrahedral.

Upon removal of Li, the material converts to the ferric form FePO4. This structure is significant as it contributes to the cathode of lithium rechargeable batteries. It is affordable, stable, and can be safely used to store energy.

For example, an 18650 cell has a diameter of 18mm and is approximately 65mm long.
