What is a Sodium Battery?

A sodium-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery that uses sodium ions (Na+) as its charge carriers. Its working principle and cell construction are similar to those of lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, but it replaces lithium with sodium as the cathode material.

Sodium-ion batteries have received academic and commercial interest in the 2010s and early 2020s, largely due to the uneven geographic distribution, high environmental impact, and high cost of lithium. An advantage of sodium is its natural abundance, particularly in saltwater. Another factor is that cobalt, and nickel are not required for sodium-ion batteries, and more abundant iron-based materials work well in Na ion batteries.

The development of Sodium ion batteries started in the 1990s, and after three decades of development, they are at a critical moment of fast commercialization.

Electric vehicles using sodium-ion battery packs were just commercially available. China JAC Motors launched the first EV built with Sodium car battery just in Jauary, 2024, which is manufactured by HiNa Battery.
