NMC (also referred to as Li-NMC, LNMC, NCM, CMN, CNM, MNC, MCN) full form is Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxides, which are mixed metal oxides of Lithium, Nickel, Manganese and Cobalt. These metal oxides act as cathode of lithium ion secondary battery, and graphite serves as anode. The introduction of the mixture enables NMC Lithium ion Battery to be a more stable and energy-dense Li-ion Rechargeable Battery compared to other types of lithium-ion batteries. So that NMC Lithium Battery is ideal choice for electric vehicles, power tools, ebike, motorcycle, AGV, etc.
The proportion of three metal oxides usually comes by 1:1:1, namely, one third nickel, one third manganese, and one third cobalt. Cobalt is a non-renewable resource and expensive. Manufacturers of batteries have to decrease the cobalt concentration while make some performance sacrifices. Take NCM532 for example, which contains 5 parts nickel, 3 parts cobalt, and 2 parts manganese, is an effective combination. However, NMC622 and NMC811 are more combinations of Nickel. As a high energy active material, Nickel is stabilized by cobalt.
Li-NMC Battery has nominal voltage at 3.6~3.7 Volt, typical operating range from 3.0 to 4.2 Volt. Specific energy is 150~220 Wh/kg.
